I’m The Origami Owl Designer But What Do I Say at a Jewelry Bar?

I get this all the time, after a new designer joins the business. That flood of emotions as the starter kit arrives and I get a message or phone call with the works, “OK I am a new Origami Owl Designer but Jill, what do I say, what do I do, I don’t think I can do this?”

Back in the early days every party plan company came with the old reliable script. Some companies even still have it. It said word for word exactly what the company wanted you to do, say and wear. They told you exactly how your displays were to be set up, what games you had to play and what every single consultant was to wear and memorize saying. Sound fun? I am certainly not knocking any of the party planning companies that have been around while. In fact our business plans were written based on the success of these companies but as times changes, so was the need for a little variation. A little authenticity. A way for each independent consultant to be just that, themselves.

Now times are a little different. Successful direct sales consultants are those that are authentic and keep things simple. When I train a new consultant, I tell them just that.  It is simple. Remember the day that you discovered Origami Owl and you were so excited about it. You had to call every one you knew and say look at these amazing lockets. You were jumping up and down and then took a leap of faith and before you knew it, you were signing up on the waiting list. Then every day that went by, you were more overcome by excitement and emotion about getting that starter kit and starting your new business. Well that passion, that excitement is then slammed into a wall by fear. Fear stops most consultants dead in their tracks. It is so sad to watch. Fear is that emotion that takes away all the good feelings and scares the bejeebies out of people. Some go no further or some will give every excuse in the book as to why they can’t go any further. I have heard them all.

  • I just don’t have time
  • I don’t have the personality to do this
  • I can’t be like you
  • I don’t know what to say
  • No one in my town is interested
  • No one on my Facebook page will say anything
  • No one does “parties” around here
  • I’ll start next month
  • and on, and on, and on

I am a pretty straight forward mentor and the first thing out of my mouth is Bull Patoowie! My  job as your mentor is to help you push through that nasty little critter called fear. You don’t just choose me to show you where the Policy and Procedure manual is or what good flyer I have. I am here to stop you in your tracks from all those darn excuses.

Now lets go back to what do I do, what do I say after we convince you that those excuses are bad and to ignore them. First of all, have your launch party as soon as you can. Don’t wait a long period of time because you think you have to know everything before you get started. Wrong. Dive in… fast. The quicker you have your party, the less time you have to think about it and the quicker you will see how truly easy it is.

What Do You say at a party? It is truly this simple:

  1. A little about you ~ how you got involved and why you love Origami Owl, what your dreams are and what the business has done for you.
  2. A little about the company ~ Tell the history of Origami Owl and how it came to be
  3. Tell a little about buying (the products), hosting (a girls night out), and joining (starting their own Origami Owl business)

That is it! Now they don’t have to be in that order and you can hit on the aspects any way you wish whether it be with games, or drawings or some other fun way.  The true fun party is about the experiences. Guests do not care about each and every product. They truly don’t and you can answer those specific questions when you just start mingling and helping with check out. Your presentation should be 10-15 minutes tops and then just start roaming the room and building relationships.

Well Jill they still say, what do you say at a party? Well it changes with every single party. It is never the same, but I would be lying if I told you when I first started in direct sales that I did’t start with a script. So ok here it goes. If you really don’t want to listen to me and need something to go by, here is a a very rough draft of my old script. But I highly recommend that you make your presentation your own. If you are not authentic, people will see right through it and … well lets just say…. the goal of making it memorable will have not been accomplished.

Good evening ladies! My name is Jill McCarthy and I want to thank you for taking the time to come out tonight to “Lisa’s” Origami Owl Jewlery Bar tonight.  How many of you have heard of Origami Owl? (In my area, most have not) Great! There are new lockets and charms for those of you that are familiar and for those of you that are new, I think you’re going to love it!! Not too many women I meet don’t like sparkle.

I am not a salesy type of girl, in fact, I don’t like sales at all, but what I do love is seeing the average person who may have always believed they weren’t good enough to do something like this to start living their dreams. And ………….. that is it. My presentation varies a little bit and I change games but I get all the bullet points in there and I try to touch a few hearts. I add to my story a bit and when they hear about the more detailed story of why O2, they can relate and that is when I connect with my customers and hopefully future team mates. 

Believe in Yourself!

You can do this. I believe in you. Keep your parties simple, easy and authentic and you will win the hearts of your customers and team for years to come. Believe in yourself. Believe in your why. You know what to say.  Stop doubting what you have the ability to do. Just keep your passion and excitement for Origami Owl and the rest falls in place.  Stay true to the very first day you found Origami Owl and then stand up there for only 10 minutes and share that first day you fell in love.
